Greetings on Appointment as Director of Cardiology

Chief of Cardiology Jiro Aoki

The St. Luke’s International Hospital Cardiovascular Center was established in 2012 to provide advanced specialized medical care for cardiovascular diseases and comprehensive cardiovascular treatment. With over 20 cardiologists and cardiac surgeons on staff, we provide optimal treatment for each patient through shared decision making with patients and their primary care physicians. We continue to contribute to local healthcare while leveraging the strengths of a general hospital with low barriers between medical departments. We hope you will continue to use the St. Luke’s International Hospital Cardiovascular Center.

At our center, under one of St. Luke’s International University’s basic principles of “People-Centered Care (PCC),” we focus on providing comprehensive medical care. This involves a “Heart Team” of cardiologists, cardiovascular surgeons, anesthesiologists, radiologists, nurses, radiological technologists, clinical engineers, clinical laboratory technicians, physical therapists, pharmacists, registered dietitians, case workers, and medical office staff working closely together. They collaborate from diagnosis and treatment selection through to post-discharge care, all centered around each individual patient.

In the Department of Cardiology, we are equipped to provide optimal catheter treatments for ischemic heart disease, arrhythmias, and valvular heart disease. We hold daily Heart Team conferences with the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery to discuss and determine the best treatment options. For ischemic heart disease, we use coronary CT and coronary angiography, as well as analyses such as FFRCT and QFR to diagnose functional ischemia beyond just stenosis rates. This helps us determine the need for revascularization treatment. We also diagnose vasospastic angina and microvascular angina. For valvular heart disease, in addition to TAVI for treating aortic stenosis through catheterization, we also perform MitraClip procedures for mitral regurgitation. Forarrhythmias, including atrial fibrillation, we perform ablation as well as catheter-based left atrial appendage closure. For acute circulatory support, in addition to conventional IABP and percutaneous cardiopulmonary support (PCPS), we can also use IMPELLA. In addition to catheter treatments, we are also equipped to diagnose and treat adult congenital heart diseases. For heart failure management, we take a multidisciplinary Heart Team approach for active intervention and provide comprehensive care including post-discharge rehabilitation. We also strive to consistently provide high-quality medical care using Quality Indicators (QI).

In the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery, we aim to provide a wide range of cardiac and vascular treatments with a policy of pursuing less invasive approaches (MICS) when outcomes are comparable. Robotic valve repair, MICS valve repair and replacement, and MICS-CABG are available for a wide range of conditions through small incisions. As a specialized facility for aortic valve repair, we actively perform aortic valve-sparing root replacement and aortic valve repair, even in emergency cases. As a member of the Heart Team, we strive to provide treatments that meet patients’ needs, without barriers between internal medicine and surgery, including hybrid treatments with catheter interventions.

Message from the Director of Cardiovascular Surgery

Chief of Cardiovascular Surgery Kohei Abe

Our Department of Cardiovascular Surgery was established in 1992 with the opening of the new hospital, and in 2012, under the leadership of Center Director Kohei Kawazoe, a pioneer in valve repair surgery in Japan, it became part of the Cardiovascular Center to provide comprehensive, state-of-the-art cardiovascular surgical treatments. With a policy of pursuing less invasive treatments when outcomes are comparable, we actively incorporate minimally invasive cardiac surgery (MICS) for heart valve surgeries, minimally invasive coronary artery bypass grafting (MICS-CABG), robot-assisted valve surgery, and stent graft treatments. As a specialized facility for aortic valve repair, we actively perform aortic valve repair and aortic valve-sparing root replacement.

Our hospital’s distinctive feature is our barrier-free team medicine approach. By holding daily Heart Team conferences with cardiologists, nurses, and allied health professionals, we strive to provide treatments that meet patients’ needs, including hybrid treatments with catheter interventions.

Introduction to Our Center

Cardiology Advisor Nobuyuki Komiyama

At our center, based on one of St. Luke’s International University’s fundamental principles, “People-Centered Care (PCC),” we have been operating since our establishment under the following four key concepts:

1

FOR PATIENTS

We respect each patient individually and provide an excellent experience.

We implement various advanced medical treatments such as catheter-based stent treatments and coronary artery bypass surgery for acute myocardial infarction and angina, catheter ablation for arrhythmias like atrial fibrillation, stent graft treatment for aortic aneurysms, advanced intensive treatment for severe heart failure, and less invasive heart valve disease treatments (TAVI, MitraClip, MICS, robotic surgery).

We have multiple specialists for adult congenital heart disease (ACHD) and provide specialized drug treatments and catheter interventions.

We manage pregnant women with ACHD in cooperation with obstetricians.

We enhance our oncology cardiology outpatient clinic for the diagnosis and treatment of cancer therapy-related cardiovascular diseases.

We support Shared Decision Making that aligns with scientific evidence and respects the diverse values of patients and their families.

We actively accept patients with cardiovascular diseases from around the world.

2

WITH COMMUNITY

We walk together with the community and contribute to social transformation.

We collaborate with the Emergency Center to serve as a central facility for cardiovascular emergency care in Tokyo’s central district.

We aim for seamless care transitions for patients by collaborating with local clinics, hospitals, visiting nurse stations, and care facilities.

3

WITH STAFF

We operate with a focus on valuing people, making our center attractive to everyone.

We promote work style reforms to establish a sustainable healthcare delivery system and contribute to staff work-life balance.

Along with advanced professional education, we nurture practitioners of holistic medicine.

4

FOR THE FUTURE

We aim to be a center that passes on value to the next generation.

We actively conduct research on the introduction of cutting-edge medical technologies, new diagnostic and treatment techniques, and IT applications, aiming to incorporate these into daily clinical practice.

As a Heart Team, we strive daily to realize these missions.
Please look forward to the further development of the St. Luke’s International Hospital Cardiovascular Center.

OUR SPECIALTIES

Center Features

PATIENT-CENTERED CARE

Patient-Centered Holistic Care

We provide medical care that considers the patient holistically, not just focusing on the heart as a single organ or disease.
We propose treatments tailored to individual patients, considering their health condition and values.

Heart Team

We hold daily Heart Team conferences with staff involved in cardiovascular diseases to address patient issues as a team. By maintaining close cooperation between all medical departments and professions, we provide comprehensive, optimal medical care.

Minimally Invasive and Advanced Treatments

In catheter treatments, we strive for treatment approaches that allow patients to return to their daily lives as soon as possible, maintaining world-class standards. In surgical treatments, we focus on minimally invasive and advanced approaches, actively performing valve repair surgeries including aortic and mitral valves, robot-assisted surgeries, minimally invasive cardiac surgeries, off-pump coronary artery bypass surgeries, and stent graft insertions.

Adult Congenital Heart Disease

With Dr. Koichiro Niwa, former chairman of the Japanese Society for Adult Congenital Heart Disease, as a special advisor, we have established a system to manage and treat congenital heart diseases in adulthood. Patients from all over the country come to us for specialized treatment.
